Wong Wai Yin

Doris Wong Wai Yin (born in 1981), is a Hong Kong born artist, working with various types of media such as paintings, sculptures, collages, installations, videos and photography. In her work she explores her internal conflicts, raising and answering questions about the journey of motherhood, her fears and struggle with self-doubt.

Background

Born in Hong Kong in 1981, Wong graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree form the Chinese University of Hong Kong [1] in 2004, and a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Leeds[1] in 2005. She was also the Founder of the Observation Society[2] in Guangzhou and teaches as a part-time lecturer at the City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.[3] She has also joined the Department of Fine Arts, CUHK, in 2012.[3]

Work

Ranging from painting, sculpture, collage, installations and photography, Wong's works have won acclaim for her unique, conceptual approach. Possessing an expansive way of thinking beyond traditional studio practices, the artist frequently investigates the nature of what is real or fake, what constitutes art, and what doesn't. Creating emulators, Wong proceeds to juxtapose these 'raw' pieces alongside the original articles, dispelling the notion of an ideal framework, and persuading viewers to question the nature of authenticity; challenging preconceptions whilst blurring boundaries. Wong has exhibited her works extensively in Hong Kong, as well as showcases in Japan, U.S.A, Singapore and Guangzhou.

Personal life

Wong currently lives and works in Hong Kong. She is married to artist Kwan Sheung-chi, with whom she has worked on several projects like "EVERYTHING GOES WRONG FOR THE POOR COUPLE",[4] questioning issues such as "What are Hong Kong's core values?" and "What is art?". The couple has one son together.[5]
