1945 San Diego State Aztecs football team

The 1945 San Diego State Aztecs football team represented San Diego State College[note 1] during the 1945 college football season.

San Diego State did not field a team in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II. For this shortened first post-war season, San Diego State was again a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), but only two CCAA schools fielded a team so there was no champion named. The team was led by head coach Bob Breitbard in his first and only season with the Aztecs.[note 2] They played home games at Balboa Stadium in San Diego, California. The Aztecs finished the season with two wins and five losses (2–5, 1–0 CCAA). Overall, the team was outscored by its opponents 65–163 for the season.

No San Diego State players were selected in the 1946 NFL Draft.[11][12]

  1. San Diego State University was known as San Diego State College from 1935 to 1971.
  2. Bob Breitbard was very prominent in San Diego sports. In addition to coaching, Breitbard founded the Breitbard Hall of Fame in 1953, which became part of the San Diego Hall of Champions. He was responsible for the building of the San Diego International Sports Center in 1966. He was also the owner of the first two tenants of the arena, the San Diego Gulls of the Western Hockey League starting in 1966, and the 1967 NBA expansion team San Diego Rockets (now the Houston Rockets).
  3. California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) was known as Fresno State Normal School from 1911 to 1948
  4. What is now known as the Pomona-Pitzer football team played using just the Pomona College name from 1893 to 1949. Pitzer College did not exist until 1963.
