- 31 March - Nino de Angelo is selected to represent Germany at the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest with his song "Flieger". He is selected to be the thirty-fourth German Eurovision entry during Ein Lied für Lausanne held at the German Theatre in Munich.
- 9 October - Premiere of Australian soap opera Neighbours on Sat. 1.
- 22 November - British science fiction series Doctor Who begins premiering on television stations across Germany with the series going to air on RTL Television. The series will start with the very first serial of the 24th season Time and the Rani which was also the very serial to star Sylvester McCoy as the doctor.

- 23 March - Australian soap Home and Away begins its UK forces television premiere on BFBS and SSVC Television several days after its very first UK launch on ITV in the previous month.
- 26 April - British children's model animated series TUGS (produced by Clearwater Features who made the first two series of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends) makes its UK forces television debut on BFBS and SSVC Television several days after airing in its homeland.
- 24 November - The US children's television series Shining Time Station (the series that introduces Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends to America) begins airing on US armed forces television on Armed Forces Network on its German based network AFN Berlin. This marks the first time that Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends aired on both UK and US forces overseas television.
