Cal State Northridge competed in the Big Sky Conference. The 1998 Matadors were led by first-year head coach Ron Ponciano. Ponciano was the third head coach in three years for the Matadors. They played home games at North Campus Stadium in Northridge, California. Cal State Northridge finished the season with a record of seven wins and four losses (7–4, 5–3 Big Sky).
