Afşin is a town and district of Kahramanmaraş Province in the Mediterranean region of Turkey.

The town of Afşin had a population of roughly 43,217 in 2012. Its economy consists mainly of agriculture although in recent years the industry has been developing slowly.

Amongst the villages in the district of Afşin are Tanır and Büyük Tatlar. Tanır has three quarters: Önder, Karşıyaka, Çağlayan.

History

Emperor Maurice was born here when it was known as Arabissus.

Afşin-Elbistan power stations

Two coal fired power stations are operational and are said to be damaging health via air pollution.[3] A third is proposed.
