Ambulance (film)

Ambulance is an upcoming American action-thriller film directed and produced by Michael Bay. Written by Chris Fedak, the film is based on the 2005 Danish film of the same name, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as two thieves who rob an ambulance occupied by a paramedic (Eiza González), and a patient in critical condition. Garret Dillahunt, A Martinez, Keir O'Donnell, and Moses Ingram also star in undisclosed roles. The film is set to be theatrically released by Universal Pictures on February 18, 2022.

The project was first announced in August 2015, when Phillip Noyce was hired to direct the film. In 2017, Noyce was replaced by Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales, both of who were eventually replaced in 2020 by Bay. In December, Gyllenhaal and Abdul-Mateen II were cast as the leading characters, with filming beginning in January 2021, in Los Angeles.

The project is described as a three-hander that tells of two brothers that steal an ambulance that is already in a heightened state with a female paramedic and a patient who is in critical condition.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was cast in December 2020 to replace Dylan O'Brien as one of the lead characters.

On August 28, 2015, it was announced that Phillip Noyce would direct the thriller film Ambulance, a remake of the 2005 Danish film of the same name, from a script written by Chris Fedak.[3] Two years later, Deadline Hollywood reported that Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales would direct the film instead,[4] but the project never entered production.[5] On November 11, 2020, Deadline Hollywood once again reported that the film had found a director, this time stating that Michael Bay would helm the film,[6] which was referred to as a "character-driven project" that would use elements from the 1994 film Speed and the 1995 film Bad Boys, and move away from Bay's normality of "standard explosion-heavy fare".[2]

Financed by Endeavor Content, and produced by the production companies New Republic Pictures and Project X,[7] the original premise of the film followed two brothers who steal an amublance occupied by a female paramedic, and was in talks to star Jake Gyllenhaal and Dylan O'Brien as the two brothers, and Eiza González as the paramedic.[8][9] On December 11, 2020, Universal Pictures confirmed that they would distribute the film, after entering negotiations to do so, and announced that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II would star alongside Gyllenhaal, following scheduling conflicts that caused O'Brien to leave the film and a rewrite of the script.[10][11] Three days later, Gonzalez was confirmed to star,[12] and on January 21, 2021, Garret Dillahunt, A Martinez, Keir O'Donnell, and Moses Ingram joined the cast.[13] In February, it was announced that Wale Folarin, Cedric Sanders, Jackson White, Colin Woodell, Olivia Stambouliah, Jesse Garcia, and Victor Gojcaj would also appear in the film.[14][15]

Filming

Ambulance began filming in Los Angeles in January 2021,[2] with Gonzalez being spotted talking to a paramedic for more information on her role and following safety protocols caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as wearing masks on set.[16] On January 22, Gyllenhaal was seen in between takes during the filming of a bank robbery scene, and for a few days, a hostage sequence was filmed in Downtown Los Angeles.[17][18] On February 3, Gonzalez was seen having a discussion with director and producer Michael Bay on set.[18]

Release

Ambulance is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States by Universal Pictures on February 18, 2022.[7]
