Early life and education

Anna Cathcart was born on June 16, 2003 in Vancouver where she was raised.[3] She has a sister who is five years older than she is.[4] As of 2020, Cathcart currently attends a public high school.[5][6] Cathcart described her school experience as being "like having two full-time jobs at once".[7] On the set of Odd Squad, Cathcart and her castmates were tutored in two-hour blocks.[8]

Career

Early work and Odd Squad

Cathcart stated that "my older sister started acting before I did and I was always [too] shy [to act] when I was little so I was not into it. It seemed super cool but not for me."[9] At the age of eight, she appeared in a Crayola and Campbell's Soup commercial.[3] Cathcart stated that she has "never really been to acting classes", saying that "I got my inspiration for being an actor from watching Disney Channel every single day, and I watch Netflix all the time [...] that's where I've gotten my coaching and my acting ideas, just from watching so much TV".[10]

At the age of 12, following a hiatus,[3] Cathcart was scouted and asked to audition for the TVOKids and PBS Kids series, Odd Squad.[11] Cathcart and fellow actor Isaac Kragten were cast as Agents Olympia and Otis respectively.[8] They filmed the series for seven months in Toronto.[11][3] Cathcart stated that the experience was an "amazing experience and it changed [her] life forever".[12] The first episode of season 2, "First Day", aired on June 20, 2016 on PBS Kids and June 21, 2016 on TVOKids.[13]

In the same year, Cathcart reprised her role for the film spin-off, Odd Squad: The Movie, marking her first theatrical appearance.[14] Cathcart won a Joey Award for her work as well as being co-nominated for another Joey Award along with her castmates. In November 2016, PBS ordered 20 one to three minute episodes of an Odd Squad spin-off titled OddTube. In the series, Cathcart portrayed Agent Olympia, the character who hosted the show.[15]

2017–present; Film breakout and other works

In 2017, Cathcart appeared in the sequel to the Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants, Descendants 2, in which she portrayed Dizzy Tremaine, daughter of Drizella Tremaine.[16] The film premiered on July 21, 2017, and was viewed by 8.92 million viewers across six networks on the night of its premiere.[17][18] The Best Darn Girls wrote that her character would "quickly become a fan favourite".[19] Cathcart described the role as a "dream come true"[20][21] and said she was "starstruck" when she met the cast.[22] Additionally, Cathcart portrayed Tween Drizella in Once Upon a Time in episodes "One Little Tear" and "Sisterhood".[23]

In 2017, at the age of 14, Cathcart joined the cast of the film adaption of Jenny Han's bestselling book To All the Boys I've Loved Before, in which she was to portray 11-year-old Kitty Covey, the younger sister of protagonist Lara Jean.[24][25] In her audition, Cathcart said she "sat cross-legged and apparently that made all the difference. [The film crew] told [her] afterwards that once [she] sat like that, they knew [she] would be perfect for Kitty".[26] The film was released in 2018 on Netflix[27] and quickly became one of the most viewed Netflix original films.[28][29] The film received generally favourable reviews and critics praised the actors.[30] Molly Freeman of Screen Rant called Cathcart a "hilarious standout"[31] while Charlie Salek of Joker Mag called the supporting performances "crucial".[32] Cathcart described the role of Kitty as being "such a fun role to play".[12] Cathcart drew similarities between her and the character of Kitty Covey in a way that she and Kitty were both "so close with [their] older sister(s)"[33] but also mentioned that "Kitty's probably more out there and more confident than [she is]".[26]

In 2018, Cathcart was featured in Teen Vogue's 21 Under 21[34] and Tiger Beat and Instagram's 19 Under 19.[35][10] In November 2018, Cathcart cast in the Brat web-based series Zoe Valentine in which she was to portray the eponymous character.[36][37] Cathcart stated that she hadn't auditioned for the role but instead was contacted about the role.[38] The first episode, which premiered on January 17, 2019, received 4.9 million views on YouTube as of November 2020.[39] Cathcart described filming as being "crazy", saying "[it was] such a blur but so much fun".[11] Cathcart starred as Zoe Valentine again in Brat film Spring Breakaway which was released on March 15, 2019 on YouTube.[40][41] Zoe Valentine was later renewed for a second season.[42]

Cathcart reprised her role as Dizzy Tremaine in the third instalment of the Descendants franchise, Descendants 3. She was featured "Good to be Bad" from the Descendants 3 soundtrack.[43] Cathcart said she enjoyed the production of the film, saying it was "so much fun"[44] and said being part of the film was an "absolute dream".[12] S-Littner of Mr Movie's Film Blog wrote that Cathcart's character being "sidelined" was a "bummer".[45] Cathcart spoke at 2019 Vancouver WE Day[46] about being true to yourself and talked about inspirational teachers, saying "a good teacher can change your whole school year".[7]

She reprised her role as Kitty Covey in 2020 in To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You[47] which had been filmed from March to May 2019, the film being primarily filmed in Vancouver.[48] Released in February 2020, the film received generally mixed reviews.[49] Cathcart received praise for her performance. The Post said that Cathcart was one of the only members of the returning cast to bring the "same type of energy as [she] did in the first film."[50] Cathcart commented that playing Kitty was "super fun".[51] She was nominated for the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award which allowed audiences to vote for their favourite Canadian working in film, television, or digital media.[52] In mid-2020, because of the restrictions placed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cathcart hosted a virtual series called Letters To which allowed fans to connect with their favourite authors.[53][54][55][56][57][58] Developed by Picturestart and released on Facebook Watch, Glitter Magazine wrote that the series would have "all literary fans buzzing".[59]

Upcoming projects

Cathcart is set to reprise her role in the third film of the To All the Boys I've Loved Before film series titled To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean, which was filmed majorly in Vancouver, New York and Seoul[6] from July to September 2019.[60] She is set to star as Molly in Disney Channel Original Movie Spin which is scheduled for a 2021 premiere.[61] Principal photography for Spin began in early October 2020 and wrapped in late November.[62]

Personal life

Cathcart supports being authentic and supports Asian representation in Hollywood: "It's so important for everyone to see someone onscreen that looks like them, no matter what they look like, who they are, or what their race is [...] No matter who you are, if you really want to follow your dreams you can, and it's not just what you look like or what your background is — anyone has the opportunity to make their dreams come true." She describes herself as an introvert.[34] Cathcart has myopia and wears glasses.[63]
