Area code 209 is the California telephone area code that was split from area code 415 on October 26, 1957. It covers Stockton, Modesto, Turlock, Merced, Winton, Atwater, Livingston, Manteca, Ripon, Tracy, Lodi, Galt, Sonora, Los Banos, San Andreas, Mariposa, and Yosemite, the northern San Joaquin Valley (part of California's Central Valley), and the Sierra Foothills.
The southern half was split into area code 559 on November 14, 1998. The area code is close to exhaustion and an overlay of 209 will likely be necessary by late 2022.[1]
