History

AREWA24 is owned by Equal Access and hosts cultural and educational programming for northern Nigerian people in the Hausa language.[3][4][5] The channel's telecommunications network is Nilesat.

AREWA24 was launched in 2013 in order to fill a void in locally-produced Hausa language entertainment and lifestyle programming. The launch cost approximately seven million dollars and was sponsored by the United States Department of State. The channel is the first 24/7 Hausa language television station rooted in peace building and entertainment. According to the Equal Access International website, the channel is meant to amplify the rich culture of Northern Nigeria, generating cultural pride and positivity.[6]

In 2017, AREWA24 partnered with Eutelsat Communication to enhance its capacity as a free television channel in Sub-Saharan Africa for Hausa speaking people.[7] In 2018, the channel added music and sports in the Hausa language.[8] In the same year, AREWA24 forged a new partnership with Girl Effect to support the success of girls in northern Nigeria.[9] The channel has also partnered with the Kannywood cinema based in Kano, Nigeria.[10]
