History
Australian Iron & Steel (AI&S) was established in 1928 to take over the business of Hoskins Iron & Steel. It was owned by the existing Hoskins shareholders, Dorman Long, Howard Smith and Baldwins with the new shareholders providing the funding necessary to replace the blast furnaces at Lithgow with a new one at Port Kembla.[1][2][3] In October 1935, AI&S was purchased by BHP.[4][5][6]
