Barry Hill's outstanding accomplishments as a defensive back for the Iowa State football team are virtually untouchable. A three-year letterwinner, Hill excelled as a cornerback and safety for the Cyclones from 1972-74. The native of Delray Beach, Fla., set the bar for safeties in the Big Eight, breaking virtually every interception record in the ISU and Big Eight Conference annals.
Hill was generally regarded as the best athlete on the ISU campus after starring in football and basketball at Carver High School in Delray Beach, Fla. Hill was an all-state prep basketball player who turned down a scholarship offer to play hoops at Brown University. Defensive lineman Lawrence “Big Daddy” Hunt, who was Hill's teammate at Carver, also went to Iowa State and has indelible memories of his teammate. Both ended up at Iowa State under head coach Johnny Majors.
