Blue Period (manga)

Blue Period (Japanese: ブルーピリオド, Hepburn: Burū Piriodo) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi. The series has been serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon since June 2017 and has been collected in 8 tankōbon volumes as of September 2020. The series is licensed in English by Kodansha USA. An anime television series adaptation will premiere in 2021.

Plot

Yatora Yaguchi is a fairly popular student who excels in school, but often deals with inner emptiness and frustrations. One day he became fascinated by a painting at his high school's art club so deeply that it inspired him to try his hand at painting. Later he was inspired by a friend Ryuji and subsequently joining the art club, becoming more deeply involved, and attempts to apply for the Tokyo University of the Arts as his choice of college.

Blue Period is written and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi. The series began in the August 2017 issue of Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine, released on June 24, 2017.[1] Kodansha has collected its chapters into individual tankōbon volumes. The first volume was released on December 22, 2017.[2] As of January 21, 2021, nine volumes have been released.[3]

In North America, Kodansha USA announced the print release of the manga in November 2019.[4]

Anime

An anime television series adaptation was announced on January 19, 2021. It will premiere in 2021.[20][21]

Reception

Rebecca Silverman from Anime News Network gave the first volume a B+. She praised its coming-of-age narrative and characters (specifically the adults), while criticizing it for being too informative at times.[22]

The series ranked #4 on Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list of best manga of 2019 for male readers,[23] ranked #14, along with The Fable by Katsuhisa Minami, on the 2020 list,[24] and ranked #15, along with Bōkyō Tarō on the 2021 list.[25] It ranked #16 on the 19th "Book of the Year" list by Da Vinci magazine.[26] In 2019, the manga was nominated for the 12th Manga Taishō and the 43rd Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga.[27][28] In 2020, the manga won the 13th Manga Taishō and the 44th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga.[29][30] It was also nominated for the 24th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.[31] The series was also one of twelve manga series to make the 2021 Young Adult Library Services Association's top 126 graphic novels for teenagers list.[32]
