Geography

Bommidi is situated 34 kilometres (21 mi) southeast of Dharmapuri. It is in the southern region of the district, close to the Salem District border. The town is surrounded by more than 150 villages in the Dharmapuri and Salem Districts. Bommidi is also known as B. Mallapuram. Bommidi's name is used for the railway station, the police station situated at Nadur, the post office, and bus transportation, while the name "B. Mallapuram" is used for schools, hospitals, and government officials.

Bommidi is close to the Salem district border. It is also nearer to its district capital Dharmapuri. Bommidi is very close to Dharmapuri but due to lack of roads different route is used so the distance from Bommidi to Dharmapuri is 35 km, laying the roads for few km between Mittareddihalli and Kondagarahalli via Komberi Kanavaai will make Dharmapuri - Bommidi distance around 20 km. 

Yercaud is a hill station accessible from Bommidi. Adiyamankottai, which houses the ruins of an oval-shaped fort, is nearby. Mallapuram, Lokur, and Nallampalli are placed in the neighbourhood.

Transport

Bommidi has good rail and bus connectivity with Chennai, Salem, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Allepy, Dhanbad, etc. Bommidi is situated 58 kilometres (36 mi) from the Salem bus stand, en route to Chennai via Jolarpet Junction.

Trains

It is connected by rail.[1] Bommidi can be reached from Salem and Dharmapuri. Bommidi Railway Station is on the Coimbatore-Chennai railway line. There is also an 11 km railway line proposal for linking Bommidi railway station lying in Salem - Jolarpettai line to Muttampatti railway station lying in Salem - Dharmapuri line. The railway station in Bommidi was built in 1861 and is one of the oldest railway stations in Tamil Nadu. Trains from Kerala to New Delhi, Chennai, and Tirupati pass through Bommidi. Bommidi has direct trains to Tirupathi, Chennai, Bangalore, Mangalore, Mumbai, Kanyakumari, and Coimbatore.

Nearest airport: Salem Airport, is 39 KM from Bommidi, Coimbatore Airport to Bommidi 210 Km, Bengalore Airport to Bommidi 190 Km. The nearest city is Salem.

Bus service

A number of buses run from Dharmapuri to Salem via Bommidi. TNSTC operates daily straight buses to Chennai, Bangalore, Trichy, Coimbatore, Palani, Madurai and very frequent bus services to Salem, Dharmapuri, Omalur, and Harur.

Places of interest

  • Yercaud is a hill station in the Shevaroy Range of hills only 39 km from Bommidi, at an altitude of 1515 metres (4969 feet) above mean sea level. Lying at a higher altitude, Servarayan temple has a cool climate.
  • Hogenakal Falls is located at the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, around 90 km from Bommidi. With its fame for medicinal baths and hide boat rides, it is a major tourist attraction. Carbonatite rocks in this site are considered to be the oldest of their kind in South Asia and among the oldest in the world.
