History
Planning
On 25 May 2016, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., parent company of Celebrity, announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the STX Corporation (then owners of Chantiers) for the third and fourth ships for the Edge class.[2]
Construction
Steel Cutting for Celebrity Beyond occurred on 28 January 2020,[3] at which point Celebrity confirmed the ship's name. At the same time, it was reported that Beyond, and an unnamed future sister will evolve in design and expand in gross tonnage and passenger capacity.[4]
In August 2020, it was announced that the delivery of Beyond (as well as that of Wonder of the Seas) would be delayed by approximately 10 months due to shipyard closures and delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. [5]
In September 2020, Wonder of the Seas was floated out to the outfitting dock in Basin C. This allowed the keel for Beyond to be laid in the assembly dry dock, which occurred in a ceremony on 19 November 2020.[6] As part of Celebrity's mission of bridging the gender gap in the marine industry, the coins placed for the keel commemorate astronomer and woman's rights suffragist Annie Jump Cannon.
Amenities
Staterooms
The Edge class staterooms are balcony staterooms above the lifeboats, and will feature Infinite Veranda technology, where the balcony window can be closed during inclement weather and rough seas.[7] To achieve this, the patio portion of the balcony superstructure was moved inward. Additional balcony stateroom classes include the Concierge and Aqua Class designation, select staterooms will feature sofas. Traditional Ocean View staterooms and inside staterooms will also be offered.
The Retreat is the top-of-the-line offering on board, and features the luxury suites and Edge villas. Retreat also offers dedicated dining facilities.
Lounges and retail
Like other Edge-class ships, Celebrity Beyond will feature a 270 degree, three deck observation lounge known as Eden,[8] which features a ramp connecting decks 5 and 6, in addition to a cafe, a bar, and a 5 course dining venue.
A limited number of boutique shops will be hosted on board, the names of which remain confidential.
Other Facilities
Celebrity Beyond will be fitted with the Magic Carpet tender dock, designed to prevent hull collisions while anchored offshore. While sailing, the Magic Carpet can be used as a patio,[9] when parked at three different decks. In addition, there will be a spa and a fitness centre.
