History
Chengdu Institute of Geology, the predecessor of Chengdu University of Technology, was founded in 1956, based on the combination of geology-related faculties of Nanjing University, Chongqing University, Northwest University, China University of Geosciences (former Beijing Institute of Geology), Jilin University (former Changchun College of Geology), etc. In 1993, Chengdu Institute of Geology renamed as Chengdu Institute of Technology. Chengdu Institute of Geology (Technology) was a ministerial key university (affiliated to the Ministry of Land and Resources of China) before 2000. In 2001, Chengdu Institute of Technology amalgamated with two provincial colleges and formed Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT). It is now a key university co-constructed by the Ministry of Education of China, the Ministry of Natural Resources of China and Sichuan Provincial Government of China.
Campus and Location
CDUT is located in the north-east of Chengdu (Chenghua District), near the Shanghai-Chengdu National Highway. After a major expansion, the main campus occupies an area of approximately 2 km2. The campus is served by Chengdu University of Technology station on Line 7 and Line 8 of the Chengdu Metro.

The teaching and administrative staff numbers of the university are 3353, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science, 62 doctoral tutors, 236 professors and 546 associate professors. 96 of them have been awarded the State Council Special Allowance. CDUT has two positions for Changjiang Special Scholarships.
With faculty encouragement, students individually and in teams participate in scientific research activities and various national and provincial competition activities. These students and student teams have been awarded 838 national and provincial or ministerial level prizes by 2013.
CDUT has an excellent international reputation for its international cooperative relationships and exchanges with more than 60 universities and institutions outside China. More than 2,500 scholars and experts from over 40 countries and regions have visited CDUT to conduct research or to lecture. Students from the United States, Australia, Germany, Austria, Korea, Japan and Russia have studied at CDUT in different fields. Over 300 international cooperative research projects have already been completed. In recent years, the university has successfully held several international academic conferences.
CDUT takes great pride in its 140,000 graduates. Most of them have become experts, senior engineers, technicians, and supervisors in various fields and departments around China.
Museum
The CDUT museum, with more than 100,000 specimens, is one of the largest natural museums in West China. On display are many world and national class treasures. Among these treasures is the 22 meter long Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis, the world’s longest-necked Jurassic dinosaur. Another is the Chungkingichthys tachuenses, a rare complete fish fossil.
Library
The CDUT library holds 2,030,000 volumes and over 2,6000 electronic-journals. The university archive is one of the first-grade archives in China’s research institutions and universities, and one of the largest archives in Sichuan Province. In addition, CDUT's East Library has opened since 2016.
Scientific Research
Chengdu University of Technology is an important base for high-level talents cultivation and scientific research, housing 2 State Key Laboratories (including 1 joint program), 1 Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 2 Key Laboratories of Ministry of Land and Resources, 2 Key Laboratories of Sichuan Province, 1 Key Laboratory of Sichuan Provincial Universities, 1 Philosophy and Social Science Research Base of Sichuan Province, 2 Field Bases for Scientific Observation and Research under the Ministry of Land and Resources, and 1 Philosophy and Social Science Popularization Base of Sichuan Province.

State Key Laboratories
State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation
This laboratory is the only national key laboratory in the petroleum industry in China. It is a base for scientific research, experimental research, academic exchange, and high-level personnel training in the petroleum industry.
Research orientations of this laboratory are: oil and gas reservoir geology and exploitation engineering.
Main research tasks: Comprehensive research on oil and gas reservoirs (reservoir geology), Oil/gas-bearing basin dynamics and potential oil/gas resources analysis, Research on the complex petroleum geophysics and Research on potential oil/gas resource and its development strategy.
In recent years the laboratory has completed many research projects at national, ministerial and provincial levels and projects from oil fields. Many important research achievements have been attained in the areas of reservoir geology, comprehensive research on complex oil/gas reservoirs, seismic wave theory of complex oil/gas reservoirs, oil/gas reservoir estimation, complex oil/gas reservoir exploitation geology, and water-bearing oil/gas reservoirs. The achievements have made great economic and social benefits and have been awarded many prizes in national, ministerial, and provincial levels.
State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection
The State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection (SKLGP) was established on the basis of College of Environment and Civil Engineering, CDUT and the national key specialty lab of geological engineering founded by Ministry of Education of China. It provides master and doctoral degree programs and runs a postdoctoral research station. The laboratory includes seven research divisions and research centers and nine well equipped testing labs playing a vital role in scientific research and high-level personnel training.
As the only state key laboratory in the field of engineering geology in China, the research orientations of the lab include hazard evaluation and prevention, soil and rock stability research for large engineering projects and environmental impact, regional stability and ecological and environmental geology, and geological hazard detection and information technology.
In the past 10 years the laboratory has undertaken over 300 research projects including many national, ministerial, and provincial level engineering projects. Academic research achievements have been recognized with more than 20 prizes in national, ministerial, and provincial levels—including one First Prize National Advancement in Science and Technology. More than 10 post-doctoral research fellows have studied at CDUT. More than 100 PhD and 300 master's degree students have graduated from the laboratory. The laboratory has also obtained two national prizes and 8 provincial and ministerial prizes for Excellent Teaching Achievements.
