Chung Ling High School

Chung Ling High School (simplified Chinese: 锺灵中学; traditional Chinese: 鍾靈中學; pinyin: Zhōng líng zhōng xué; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chong-lêng tiong-o̍h; Malay: Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Ling) is a secondary school in Malaysia, located in George Town, Penang. Chung Ling High School was established in 1917 as a primary school and formed its junior high department in 1923, making it the first Chinese high school in Malaya. It remains one of the top Chinese schools in Malaysia to-date. Only primary school students with outstanding academic performance are accepted to the school.

The school

Chung Ling High School is one of a handful of schools that conform to the government policy of 60–40. The 60-40 Policy encourages students to focus on the study of science (Science Stream/Curriculum) as compared to the study of art or commerce (Art/Business Streams/Curricula) to the ratio of 60:40.[2] In fact, Chung Ling High School has far exceeded this guidance, with over 90% of its students studying in the Science Stream.[3]

The school enrolls approximately 2,200 students as of 2019. The students are being served by over 160 academic and non-academic staff.

An interesting fact about the school is that there is an unwritten rule whereby the principal of Chung Ling High School has to be an alumnus.

Extracurricular activities

Chung Ling High School Choir

In 1969, a group of Chung Ling High School students came up with the idea of forming a choir with the support of the alumni.[4] The Chung Ling High School Choir has become one of the most famous choir groups, and has been maintaining its outstanding performance and prominence since its establishment.[5]

Dragon boat accident
Main article: 2010 Penang dragon boat tragedy

On 17 January 2010, the school's dragon boat team capsized during practice, having collided with a tugboat amid strong currents. The tragedy claimed six lives in total. Among the dead were coach and school teacher Chin Aik Siang and students Jason Ch'ng, Brendon Yeoh, Goh Yi Zhang, Wang Yong Xiang and Chiah Zi Jun.

Further development

Chung Ling College (锺灵学院)

On 26 October 2007, the Board of Governors of the Tri-Chung Ling High Schools announced they had passed a motion to form a tertiary institution to complement the existing Tri-Chung Ling High Schools. The Chairman of the Board, Dato' Oo Jooi Tee, noted that while the board had approved the motion, the plan would be on hold until sponsorship could be found. noting this should not be difficult as there was great support for the establishment. The proposed Chung Ling College would first be established on the grounds of Chung Ling High School in Air Itam, Penang. However, it would later be moved to larger, more suitable grounds.[6] Unfortunately this plan has been cancelled.

Notable alumni

E-learning during COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia, Chung Ling High School had started E-learning through meeting and learning platforms such as Zoom, Google Classroom and Google Meet on 23 March 2020, which was the day that school should have reopened after the March school holiday. As the Movement Control Order kept on extending, almost all teachers and students are actively involved in E-learning in order to ensure that students are kept on pace with the required curriculum, especially for those who are partaking in National Exams for the year 2020.[9]
