Internal selection
On 26 November 2012, the Croatian national broadcaster HRT announced that their entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 would involve the traditional Croatian style Klapa.[3] Following the announcement, a public call for song submissions was opened where Croatian composers were able to submit songs in the Klapa style to the broadcaster with the deadline on 26 December 2012.[4]
On 16 January 2013, HRT announced that a three-member expert committee had selected the song "Mižerja", composed by Goran Topolovec, as the entry that would be performed by a Klapa ensemble of up to 6 members at the Eurovision Song Contest. The song "Cili svit za bili cvit", composed by Miroslav Buljan, was selected as the reserve song.[4][5] On 11 February 2013, HRT announced the six klapa members, formed by an alternate three-member expert committee, that would perform the contest entry. The members were:[6]
- Marko Škugor, from klapa Kampanel (first tenor)
- Ante Galić, from klapa Sinj (second tenor)
- Nikša Antica, from klapa Kampanel (first baritone)
- Leon Bataljaku, from klapa Crikvenica (second baritone)
- Ivica Vlaić, from klapa Sebenico (bass)
- Bojan Kavedžija, from klapa Grdelin (bass)
On 27 February 2013, the final version of "Mižerja", arranged by Nikša Bratoš and Dragan Brnas with vocal arrangements by Mojmir Čačija, was presented on 27 February 2013 during a press conference in Zagreb. The official name of the klapa, Klapa s Mora, was also revealed during the press conference.[7]
At Eurovision
Croatia was allocated to compete in the first semi-final on 14 May for a place in the final on 18 May.[8] In the first semifinal, the producers of the show decided that Croatia would perform 4th, following Slovenia and preceding Denmark.[9] The Croatian performance focused on the vocals of the six members of Klapa s Mora, who were dressed in traditional uniforms worn by Croatian knights.[10]
Croatia failed to qualify from the first semi-final of the competition, placing 13th and scoring 38 points.[1][2]
