Critical reception
Due to allegations of Lanez shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion earlier in the year, many music critics declined to review the album, with Vulture going on to state in a headline: "For The Love of God, Do Not Listen to Tory Lanez's New Album 'DAYSTAR'".[1] Andre Gee of Complex called the album "a project too contemptible to be evaluated on any musical scale" and "much worse than just a terrible album", citing the way in which Lanez uses his platform to justify his abuse of black women.[2] Highsnobiety announced that they would no longer cover Lanez's music anymore, and called Daystar "the most toxic album of the year".[3] They also viewed his decision to release an album instead of apologizing as particularly insensitive given the recent political climate, saying:
His moves are particularly sickening considering the proximity to this week's ruling on the murder of Breonna Taylor. In 1962, Malcolm X said that "the most disrespected person in America is the black woman." Taylor's memory has been used to sell magazines, get clicks, and win political favor. And yet, the police officers responsible for her death were not brought to justice. Lanez has used the same logic to promote his album, exploiting the trauma enacted on Black women for financial and cultural gain, while refusing to protect them or acknowledge their culpability.
Commercial performance
Daystar debuted at number ten on the US Billboard 200 chart, earning 36,000 album-equivalent units (including 2,000 traditional album sales) in its first week.[4] This became Lanez's sixth US top-ten debut.[4] The album also accumulated a total of 47.7 million on-demand streams of the album's songs during that week.[4]
