Plot

Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke board a train [N 1] to meet the Flame Hashira Kyōjurō Rengoku and assist him in his mission to hunt for a demon that has killed more than 40 demon slayers on a train, their deaths claimed to be disappearances. Soon after boarding, the group is attacked by some demons that Rengoku easily kills, but after having their tickets checked by the collector, all of them fall into a deep sleep, and Enmu, Lower Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki, instructs four passengers, all of whom are suffering from severe insomnia, to approach the sleeping demon slayers and use some magic ropes to enter their dreams with orders to destroy their spiritual cores so that they can never wake up again. In exchange for their cooperation, Enmu will allow them to have a peaceful dream.

During their sleep, Tanjiro dreams of reuniting with his late family, Zenitsu dreams of having a date with Nezuko, Inosuke dreams of going on a cave exploration mission with his friends being his henchmen, and Kyōjirō dreams of meeting his brother. Tanjiro realizes that he is dreaming and starts looking for ways to wake up, succeeding after being instructed by a vision of his father to kill himself inside the dream. At the same time, Nezuko uses her Blood Demon Art to burn the ropes, awakening the passengers affected by Enmu's abilities. In fear that Enmu won't allow them to have their good dreams, the passengers attack Tanjiro - however, the only exception of his attackers is the one who entered his dream, as he was moved by the warm scenery he found inside it and is immediately knocked out by Tanjiro.

While Nezuko awakens the others, Tanjiro confronts Enmu. Tanjiro continuously kills himself inside his dream every time Enmu forces him to sleep until he finally beheads Enmu. However, the demon does not die and reveals that he fused his head with the train itself. Kyōjurō instructs Inosuke to help Tanjiro look for the demon's neck while he, Nezuko, and Zenitsu stays behind to protect the other passengers. Tanjiro and Inosuke find Enmu's real neckbone in the engine room and Tanjiro severs it, killing the demon and stopping the train. However, Akaza, the Upper Moon Three, appears soon after and attacks the demon slayers, with Kyōjurō choosing to fight him single handedly after Tanjiro is severely injured.

The two clash, and Kyōjurō is fatally wounded by Akaza driving his hand through the Flame Hashira's stomach. However, Kyōjurō holds his own against the demon and manages to injure Akaza's neck while attempting to land the finishing blow. Akaza is forced to flee when the sun begins rising, but not before being injured by Kyōjurō, who carves off his arms, and Tanjiro, who throws his sword at Akaza and impales him. Tanjiro angrily calls the demon a coward for running away and declares Kyōjurō the true winner of the fight. As the Hashira and the rest of the Demon Slayer Corps are informed about Kyōjurō's death, Tanjiro and his companions mourn the passing of the Flame Hashira.

Japan

Upon release, the film broke the first-day record with ¥1.2 billion ($12.03 million ).[43] On its opening weekend, it grossed ¥4.6 billion [44] ($44 million ) in Japan. It was the best three-day opening weekend ever in Japanese theaters, and the top-grossing film worldwide for the weekend, despite several safety measures adopted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as spaced seating limiting admissions to about half of normal capacity or a ban on food and drinks in sessions with full capacity.[45] The film's record-breaking success has been attributed to the Demon Slayer franchise's popularity in Japan, in addition to the limited number of films available in Japanese theaters during the COVID-19 pandemic.[46]

In ten days, it became the fastest movie in the history of the Japanese box office to cross ¥10 billion and $100 million .[47][48][49] It surpassed the record of Spirited Away (2001), which had previously crossed the ¥10 billion milestone in 25 days and held the record for 19 years. Mugen Train also set the record for the highest-grossing second weekend.[50] Within 17 days, it broke the ¥15 billion and $150 million barriers.[51] It went on to gross ¥20.4 billion (US$197.9 million ) within 24 days, becoming the fastest film to cross ¥20 billion in Japan.[52] The film grossed ¥27,512,438,050 ($265 million ) in 45 days.[53] It crossed the ¥30 billion milestone in 59 days, setting another record as the fastest film to cross the ¥30 billion milestone,[54][55] beating Spirited Away which took 253 days to reach the same milestone.[56] In 66 days, Mugen Train set another record as the first film to top the Japanese box office charts for ten straight weekends (since the charts began publication in 2004).[57] In 73 days, Mugen Train grossed ¥32.48 billion to become the highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, surpassing Spirited Away which held the record for 19 years.[58]Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has exceeded 36.80 billion yen (US$350.7 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of over 26.88 million tickets sold. The anime film dropped to second behind the live-action romantic comedy film Hanataba Mitaina Koi o Shita, which opened in Japan on January 29.[59]

It also set the record for the highest-grossing IMAX release in Japan, with $14.2 million earned from IMAX screenings by 15 November 2020, surpassing the $13 million record previously set by Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).[60] Mugen Train went on to gross $21 million from the IMAX format in Japan, as of 27 December 2020.[61] The 4DX version of the film was released in Japan on December 26, 2021.

Numerous tie-in merchandise related to the film have been sold in Japan. When combining box office and merchandise sales, the film has generated total sales of over ¥50 billion ($480 million ) in Japan, as of 4 December 2020.[62]

Upon release, the film topped the international box office for a number of weeks,[84][60] becoming the highest-grossing animated film of 2020.[85] It also overtook Tenet to become the year's third highest-grossing film in international markets outside North America,[37] and Mugen Train is the world's fourth highest-grossing film of 2020.[61] It has also grossed US$22.3 million from the IMAX format in Asia, as of 27 December 2020.[61] The film's final worldwide tally is still increasing, and the film has yet to open in China, North America, and many other territories.

In Taiwan, Mugen Train pulled in NT$360 million (US$12.6 million ) in 17 days since its October 30 opening, becoming the year's highest-grossing film in Taiwan and setting a new record as the highest-grossing animated film of all time in Taiwan, surpassing the previous record holders Frozen 2 (2019) and Your Name (2016).[86][87] In 20 days, it became the first animated film to cross NT$400 million in Taiwan,[88] before later crossing the NT$500 million milestone.[89] Taiwanese film distributor also announced on Wednesday that the film has earned over NT$600 million (about 2.2 billion yen or US$21.43 million) after 69 days in the Taiwanese box office.[90] On February 1, 2021, the total revenue surpassed NT$620 million after 95 days in the Taiwanese box office, becoming the tenth highest-grossing film of all time in Taiwan.[91]

In Hong Kong, the film topped the box office for four consecutive weekends since its opening on November 12, 2020.[31] However, the film's box office run came to an abrupt halt as the Hong Kong box office shut down on 2 December 2020, amidst a new COVID-19 wave in Hong Kong.[32] The film is now the third highest-earning film in Hong Kong in 2020.[90]

The film was also released in Singapore on November 12, 2020[37] and became the fifth highest grossing movie of 2020 in Singapore as well as the top-grossing anime title of all time in Singapore with S$2.42 million.[38]

In Vietnam, the film was released on December 11, 2020 except for earlier fan screening , topping the box office in its opening weekend (December 11 to 13).[40]

The film opened in Indonesian cinemas on January 6, 2021, with its 4DX version releasing on the same day.[18][19] becoming the top-earning film in the first week in Indonesia according to CGV Cinemas Indonesia.[95]

The film was generally released in South Korea on January 27, 2021, whereas fan screening pre-release in limited theaters for January 22 to 24 gave the second highest weekend box office in South Korea.[96]The anime sold 66,000 tickets to rank #1 at the South Korean box office on its opening day on Wednesday. The film sold 41.7% of all tickets sold in South Korea that day, and it had already ranked #1 in advance ticket sales before its opening. The film was originally scheduled to open in South Korea in December, but it was delayed to January 27 due to concerns about the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). South Korea's overall box office last year dropped by about 70% compared to the year before.

This brings the international box office total for Demon Slayer: Mugen Train to over US$388 million.
