The song is about the fact that he saw his ex-girlfriend having an affair with his best friend. He asks her why she left him, to which she explains in a spoken voice that she did so because he had not expressed his love for her, for a period of 4 years, and it hurt her feelings very much; and she suggested to him to find someone new to take her place.

The song was produced by Michaels.[3]

The single ranked #19 on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1971.[4]
