Background and composition

Vlending confirmed that Red Velvet would be among the artists to record a soundtrack for the drama series Start-Up.[1] "Future" was released on October 17, 2020, as a digital single by Music Buddy and Vlending.[2]

Musically, "Future" was described as an "electro medium pop song featuring bright synth sounds and stylish arrangements".[3] The song is composed in the key of G major with a tempo of 100 beat-per-minute.[4] The song was produced by Taibian, Bark, and YESY, who had previously produced the soundtracks for hit dramas such as Itaewon Class, Stranger Season 2, Extraordinary You, and Hell Is Other People.[5] Lyrically, the song was written by Taibian and Park Se-jun. The lyrics convey a message of going through a scary and unstable future with someone who believes in you.[6]
