Go Crazy (Chris Brown and Young Thug song)

"Go Crazy" is a song by American singer Chris Brown and rapper Young Thug. The song is taken from their collaborative mixtape Slime & B, released on May 5, 2020. Two weeks later, on May 19, 2020, it was released as the project's lead single. The song samples the Showboys' "Drag Rap", for which the Showboys are credited as writers on the song. A music video for the song was released on July 17, 2020.

"Go Crazy" garnered positive reviews from music critics, who complimented its production and Brown's performance, being considered by many as the mixtape's best song. Despite being dropped from a mixtape released for free,[1] the song received a great success becoming Brown's biggest radio hit since 2008, charting at number 5 on the on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Brown's 7th top-five song as a lead artist, and as well Young Thug's highest lead artist charting song in the US.[2]

Background and composition

The song first appeared as track 2 on Brown's and Thug's collaboration mixtape Slime & B on May 5, 2020.[3] Two weeks later, the former and his daughter Royalty started a dance challenge for the song called "#GoCrazyChallenge" after it started gaining initial popularity on streaming services.[4] The challenge sees a person dancing on the sidewalk outside a slowly moving car. According to Brown, the challenge was inspired by influencer Mufasa.[5]

"Go Crazy" is an R&B song that runs for 2 minutes and 56 seconds, and it was produced by Murphy Kid and KanielTheOne.[6] The song's production samples "Drag Rap", by the Showboys (1986).

Critical reception

Kenan Draughorne of HipHopDX called "Go Crazy" "the album's best song, cleverly sampling The Showboys' iconic "Drag Rap" to complement the free-ranging sonics".[7] Mitch Findlay at HotNewHipHop noted Thug's appearance on the song, saying that it highlights the fact that "he wears his fortune like a peacock wears its feathers" while Brown "understands the inherent dangers posed by living a lavish lifestyle".[8]

Chart performance

Go Crazy peaked at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on the week of January 16, 2021. This was the third-lengthiest ascent to the top five (35 weeks) for a song by lead males in the Hot 100's 62-year history, behind Gabby Barrett's "I Hope," featuring Charlie Puth (45 weeks, 2020), and Imagine Dragons's "Radioactive" (42 weeks, 2012-13).[9][10][11] It is Chris Brown's 16th top ten song and Young Thug's fourth top ten on the chart.[12] The song peaked at number one on the US Rhythmic Songs, making it Brown's 12th number one song in the chart, and Thug's third number one song.[13] Go Crazy topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart as well on the week of August 22, 2020, with 22.6 million in audience in the week ending August 16, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.[14] Making it Chris Brown's ninth number-one song in the chart, and Young Thug's fourth number-one song in the airplay chart.[15][16]

In the United Kingdom, the song peaked at number ten on the UK Singles Chart. It serves as Brown's 18th top ten song and Thug's third top ten on the chart.[17][18]
