Hawaiian Drosophila
The Hawaiian Drosophila are a paraphyletic and speciose lineage of Drosophila vinegar flies, and members of the subgenus Drosophila. Over 1000 species of Drosophila are endemic to the Hawaiian islands.[1] The Hawaiian Drosophila species also include the "picture-wing" clade of Drosophila, named for the intricate patterns of melanin pigment on their wings.[2] Over 100 species belong to the picture-wing clade of flies, prompting the generation of a database devoted solely to wing diversity in the Hawaiian Drosophila lineage.[1] The Hawaiian Drosophila species group is paraphyletic, as the Scaptomyza genus is nested within the Hawaiian Drosophila clade.

Hawaiian Drosophila are studied as models of speciation and population genetics and genomics, as well as for evolution of behaviours and evolutionary development (aka evo-devo).[3] The approximately 1000 species of endemic Hawaiian Drosophila originate from a single ancestor that colonized the islands approximately 25-26 million years ago.[4][5]
The genome of Drosophila grimshawi was selected to be one of the landmark 12 Drosophila genomes sequenced in 2007.[6] Since then the genomes of multiple species have been sequenced, revealing genomic expansions in multiple lineages composed primarily of satellite DNA and not coding sequence.[5]
