Early years
Williams played football, basketball, and track at Davenport Central High School in Davenport, Iowa, graduating in 1977. Nebraska was the only college to offer him a scholarship for both football and basketball, and he therefore accepted, continuing on to play 4 years of both sports at Nebraska. Williams was a four-year letterwinner and earned All-Big Eight honors in 1981 and 1982.[1]
Education
Williams graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He completed a Masters of Science in Mass Communication at San Jose State University in 1993, and completed a Doctorate of Education in Organization and Leadership, including an emphasis in sports administration, at the University of San Francisco in 2000.[2]
Professional career
Williams was drafted by the New York Giants and played 12 seasons in the NFL as a tight end, with the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Oilers, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Raiders.[3]
Williams was a huge comic book fan, particularly of Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian; in order to psyche himself up for big games he would visualize himself as one of those heroes.[4]
Williams spent six years as the Athletic Director for the Academy of Art University Urban Knights[5] in San Francisco. Before Williams' hiring, Academy of Art did not have an intercollegiate athletic program. Williams and his staff created an NCAA Division II athletic department including over 200 student-athletes in 16 sports.[6]
Williams was the Associate Athletic Director of Diversity and Leadership Initiatives at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 3 years.[7]
He is currently the Director of Student Athlete Engagement and Professional Development at the University of Maryland, College Park.[8]
