Biography
Early career
Like many musicians, Voorn had a strong affiliation with music at a young age, growing up in the city of Tilburg where he learned how to play the guitar and violin.[1] His father was also a composer of music.[1]
During his education he won a DJ competition in Enschede which kick-started Voorn' music career. Since 1997 Voorn has been regularly booked for gigs and had a residency at the ATAK. However his first production was not until 2002 when he released his "Muted Trax" EP. This release, as well as support from Carl Craig, Derrick May and Laurent Garnier[2] made him decide to (temporarily) give up interior architecture and focus on his DJing career. In 2003 his "Lost Memories" EP became another underground hit. In the same year Voorn was crowned Talent of the Year at the Dutch DJ Awards.
2009 to present
2009 was the year in which Joris Voorn's popularity surged. He released the "Balance014" compilation. It managed to mix approximately 100 songs into a double CD, morphing them into a collective mix. Only Richie Hawtin had managed to create such a challenging feat successfully in the past in his DE9 series.
Voorn also released the "Dusty House Room" EPs which were a tremendous commercial success. His remix of Nalin & Kane's "Beachball" was one of the greater productions heard at the Miami Winter Music Conference and his "Sweep the Floor" was the Ibiza anthem of 2009. Joris Voorn was crowned Best Breakthrough at the annual Ibiza DJ Awards and climbed from 35th to 10th place in the Resident Advisor's DJ top 100.[3] 2009 included performances at Awakenings Festival, Space Ibiza, Amnesia and Sensation, as well as appearing in Pete Tong's Essential Mix.
In 2014, he released his third studio album "Nobody Knows," which features collaborations with Matthew Dear, Kid A and his father. The album is not all electronic and features live instruments such as guitar an bass.[1] In 2019, he released his forth studio album "Four."
In April 2020, Orbital, an EDM artist Voorn grow up listening to, released a rework of Voorn's "Never."[4]
In October 2020, Global Underground (a well respected label in EDM) released GU43 featuring Joris Voorn. The double CD album, features 100+ tracks mixed together, a feature not many before have been able to achieve.[5] The record features some of his own tracks and has been described as melodic tech-house.[6]
In 2020, Tomorrowland (EDM Festival) announced they will be streaming 2020-21 New Year's Eve celebrations online and one of the featured DJ's would be Voorn.[7]
