The journal is the continuation of the Klinische Wochenschrift (Journal for Clinical Medicine) established in 1864 and published by Springer for the "Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte". From 1992 to 1994, the journal's title was The Clinical Investigator.[1] It covers research in the areas of molecular and translational medicine and publishes original papers, review articles and correspondence pertinent to all aspects of human biology and pathophysiology.
In December 2017, most board members resigned after Springer chose Ari Waisman to succeed Detlev Ganten as editor in chief, and closed the journal's editorial office in Berlin.[2]
