Following the 2020 administrative reform, the raion was increased, all cities of regional significance throughout the region (Kherson Oblast) were subordinated to raions where they are located, thus cities of Kakhovka and Nova Kakhovka became part of Kakhovka Raion. Also the reform made changes to local subdivisions and territorial councils (rada) were replaces with territorial communities (hromada) which also were increased combining several adjacent territorial councils. In this way, instead of one settlement council and 18 village councils, Kakhovka Raion was re-subdivided into three city communities, six settlement communities and six village communities.
