Lentor MRT station

Lentor MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the Thomson–East Coast line (TEL) in the Ang Mo Kio planning area, Singapore. It will be located underneath Lentor Drive, next to its junction with Yio Chu Kang Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4.

The station is in the vicinity of the Lentor residential estate, consisting mostly of low-rise private homes, as well as condominiums such as Far Horizon Gardens, Seasons Park, Castle Green, Thomson Grove and The Calrose. West of the station, more residential developments are being planned.

History

The station was first announced on 29 August 2012 as part of the Thomson line (TSL).[4] On 15 August 2014, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that the station had been named Lentor and that it would be part of the proposed Thomson–East Coast line (TEL). The station will be constructed as part of Phase 2, consisting of 6 stations between Springleaf and Caldecott, and is expected to be completed in 2021.[5][6][7]

Contract T209 for the design and construction of Lentor station and associated tunnels was awarded to China Railway No. 5 Engineering Group Co. Ltd (Singapore Branch) at a sum of S$247 million (US$197.6 million) in October 2013. Construction started on 6 September 2014, with expected completion in 2021.[8][7] On 27 June 2014, the station was officially named Lentor following a public poll in May 2013.[3] The station was constructed using the top-down method to minimise impact to the surrounding residences and high-rise developments. An extensive survey was made to pinpoint the network of utility services at the construction site to safeguard against disruptions affecting the estates.[9]

A fatal accident happened in the early morning of 1 March 2018 that led to the death of a 48-year-old construction worker. The worker fell from a raised working platform 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) above the ground while working in a tunnel leading to the station.[10] The accident happened at 3.35 am, and the man was announced dead by paramedics at 4.30 am. Prior to the incident, four other workers were dismantling components of a tunnel boring machine after finishing tunnelling works.[10] A component of the TBM, a man-lock chamber, was being lowered using chain blocks. However, it abruptly swung and struck the platform that the worker was standing on.[10][11][12]

Initially expected to open at the end of 2020, the restrictions on the construction due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to delays in the TEL line completion, and the date was pushed to 2021.[13] On 14 December 2020, it was further announced that TEL Stage 2 opening will be delayed to the third quarter of 2021 so as to review the rail system software for the line.[14][15][16][17]

Location

The station is located underneath Lentor Drive near the junction with Yio Chu Kang Road.[18][19] Lentor station will serve the surrounding residential areas of Lentor Estate and Teacher’s Estate.[9]
