List of awards and nominations for the musical Cats
Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. The musical has received many awards and nominations for its international productions. Cats premiered at the New London Theatre in the West End in 1981.[1] The original London production ran for 21 years[1] and was nominated for six Laurence Olivier Awards, winning two awards including Best New Musical. In 1982, it opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway where it played for 18 years.[2] The original Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, out of eleven nominations. The Broadway cast recording also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
