Ludwig Ahgren

Ludwig Anders Ahgren (/ɑːɡrən/; born July 6, 1995) is an American Twitch streamer, YouTuber, and esports commentator and competitor.[1] Ahgren is best known for his livestreams on Twitch, where he broadcasts video game-related content as well as non-video game-related content such as game shows, contests, and gambling.[2] He is also known for his work as an esports commentator at various Super Smash Bros. Melee tournaments. Since beginning streaming full-time on February 16, 2019, Ahgren has skyrocketed in popularity, becoming one of the largest streamers on Twitch.[3]

Early life

Ahgren grew up in a French American bilingual household in Hollis, New Hampshire along with his mother and sister.

He attended Hollis/Brookline High School in New Hampshire, graduating in 2013.[4] In 2012, he participated in a school play of Legally Blonde in which he played Warner.[4] In this time he discovered Call of Duty commentary channels like Hutch, SeaNanners and WoodysGamerTag, which inspired him to make the channel "TheZanySidekick", his first dive into content creation.

Ahgren moved to Arizona for college, where he joined the comedy club Tempe Late Night, and also discovered Super Smash Bros. Melee. Interested, he went to local tournaments and took a liking to the esport and its community. He graduated cum laude from Arizona State University with a dual degree in English Literature and Journalism and Mass Communication in 2017.[5]

Super Smash Bros. Melee career

As a Super Smash Bros. Melee competitor, Ahgren has seen limited but notable success. His most successful year came in 2017, where Ahgren won a set of games against each of two players ranked in the top 104 of Melee's community, Team Liquid's Chillindude[6] and Tempo Storm's Vro.[7] Ahgren also won a game against the 12th ranked player in the world, Westballz,[8] later losing the set. Ahgren has achieved much more success as a Melee commentator, calling matches at many major Melee tournaments, including the GENESIS series.[9]

In 2019, Ahgren would later have a rematch with Chillindude at Mainstage, a Melee and Ultimate national tournament in Ontario, California, where Ahgren would lose to Chillindude 4–5 in a match in which each competitor wagered $100.[10]

Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series

In 2018, Ahgren organized a $1000 winner-take-all invitational Melee netplay tournament titled the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series, which was won by Counter Logic Gaming's SFAT.[11] On April 13, 2020, Ahgren announced a successor to the first Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series titled, Worldwide Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series.[12] It was renamed Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 2 when Ahgren reannounced it on June 30, 2020. The tournament was held on June 25-26 and was won by Golden Guardian's Zain.[13]

In November 2020, after the The Big House 10 tournament received a cease and desist from Nintendo over the touranment's usage of the Slippi netplay build of Melee,[14] Ahgren announced the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 3, an impromptu charity tournament. [15] LACS 3 took place on December 20-21 where Mang0 won 3-1 against Wizzrobe in the finals, the tournament raised over $261,668 to Gamers for Love.[16] As of January 2021, the prize pool for Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 3 and 2 ranks as the 10th and 11th largest in Melee history respectively.[17]

Streaming career

Ahgren began streaming part-time on May 16, 2018.[18] On February 16, 2019 after disclosing to his live stream audience that he had quit his job as the marketing manager for iQ Vapes, (later admitting that he was actually fired), he dedicated himself to streaming full-time as a career.[19]

During 2018 and 2019, Ahgren's stream remained small, mostly streaming Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Party 2, and Dark Souls.[20] His streams progressively increased in viewership, along with his subscriber count. As of 8 December 2020, Ahgren has one of the top 8 most subscribed channels on all of Twitch.[21]

In May 2019, Ahgren and a few other Melee competitors and personalities, such as Mew2King and Plup, competed in an invitational tournament for Pokémon Sword and Shield by 2016 Pokémon World Champion Wolfe Glick, where Ahgren finished first.[22][23] Ahgren also won an invitational tournament organized by Americas Cardroom to crown the 'King of Twitch Poker', defeating Mang0 and Destiny in the process.[24]

On November 10, 2019, Ahgren set the world record for the button mashing minigame “Domination” from Mario Party 4, going faster than a tool-assisted speedrun bot designed to be the fastest possible, setting a score of 201, higher than the limit of 160 which was possible due to a mod which increased the limit of points scored.[25][26] Polygon reporter Owen S. Good compared Ahgren's expression after completing the feat to NBA player Shaquille O'Neal's expression in the 2000 Western Conference Finals, saying, "If aliens landed and I had to explain what video games are and why they are fun, I’d show them this. Take a bow, Ludwig."[25]

In November 2019, Ahgren appeared in a Christmas-themed advertisement for Micro-Star International promoting the RTX 20 Series graphics card.[27] This was not the first advertisement that Ahgren had starred in, as he had previously portrayed himself in an advertisement for Hotels.com in 2018.[28]

In 2019, Ahgren launched the Mogul Moves line of clothing, which features sweatshirts and hoodies displaying the phrase "Mogul Moves" in varsity font. For the Melee tournament GENESIS 7, Ahgren successfully signed the future winner of the competition, Melee player Zain, who wore a Mogul Moves sweatshirt during the event.[29]

In June 2020, Ahgren was invited to compete against other popular Twitch streamers in the amateur chess tournament PogChamps of Chess.com, placing second in the consolation bracket. Ahgren subsequently made an appearance on the cover of the August 2020 edition of Chess Life.[30]

In October 2020, Ahgren was interviewed by The Washington Post to discuss the game Among Us, which he has played alongside Sodapoppin, Pokimane, and other popular Twitch streamers.[31]

On 7 December 2020, Ahgren released a Christmas-themed extended play titled A Very Mogul Christmas.[32]
