Practice profile
The firm's clients include Fortune 100, mid-cap, closely held, and emerging companies, and include some of the nation's leading financial, industrial, pharmaceutical, and commercial enterprises as well as educational, health care, government, and nonprofit institutions.[2]
The firm is known for both its litigation and transactional work, and has significantly broadened its capabilities organically and strategically throughout the firm's history. This expansion continued into the venture capital and emerging company space with the firm's combination with East Brunswick, New Jersey-based SorinRand, a law firm known for advising new and start-up companies in technology and tech-enabled industries and their investors in October 2014.[3] In February 2014, McCarter acquired the Washington, DC-based energy law firm Miller, Balis & O’Neil.[4]
Pro Bono Initiatives
McCarter & English has a long commitment to public service and expects its attorneys to participate in activities that promote the public interest. Through its Pro Bono Program, McCarter attorneys donate thousands of hours of their time to provide free legal services to low-income individuals and organizations of limited means in communities surrounding each of the firm's offices.[5] McCarter attorneys also provide services to the legal profession, through appointments to Supreme Court committees or as Special Masters, and through work with state bar associations. Additionally, McCarter attorneys teach at area law schools, conduct professional practice and skills trainings, and otherwise contribute to the development of law students and young lawyers.[6]
McCarter launched a pro bono fellowship program intended to benefit Newark's many unrepresented litigants, to be headed by a full-time firm lawyer.[7] The initiative provides legal representation to residents who are facing eviction proceedings by their landlords.[8] McCarter received the American Bar Association's 2019 Pro Bono Publico Award during the ABA's Annual Meeting in San Francisco.[9]
