Career

Mayorga began living in exile in Rome in 1975 to escape the rule of Augusto Pinochet in Chile.[1] Since 1992, she worked as a correspondent for the newspaper El Mercurio.[2]

Mayorga's journalism career in Mexico began in 2000 with a focus on health and education. This later developed into an interest in human rights issues, government corruption, and violence. She initially worked for El Heraldo, a daily in Ciudad Juárez, and El Diario.[3]

In 2003, she published a book, El Condor Negro: la Internacional fascista y las relaciones secretas con el régimen de Pinochet ("The Black Condor: the Fascist International and its secret relations with the Pinochet regime"). The book described the attempted assassination of Bernardo Leighton which took place during Mayorga's first year in Italy.[4] In 2007, she published Michelle Bachelet: la donna del riscatto ("Michelle Bachelet: daughter of her time") a biography about Michelle Bachelet's life.[1] In 2009, Mayorga collaborated with fellow journalist Miriam Verdugo to create Manuel Bustos, un sindicalista en la transición, ("Manuel Bustos, a unionist in transition"), a detailed book about Manuel Bustos Huerta.[5]

Due to the focus of her journalism work with Miroslava Breach, Mayorga has received death threats and fled Chihuahua in 2017.[6] Mayorga was awarded the CPJ International Press Freedom Award that same year.[3] She dedicated her acceptance speech to Breach and Javier Valdez Cárdenas, another journalist who was murdered.[7]
