Biography
Pierre Malinowski[10] was born in Reims, France to a family of an amateur historian and mayor of Orainville Alain Malinowski.[11] At the age of 18, he joined the Foreign Legion and served 6 months of service in this corps.[5] Also, he joined the regular army, where he participated in several military operations (external operations) notably in Lebanon, Africa, and the UAE.[12] Since 2017 Malinowski lives in Russia.[13][12]
Political life
In 2014 he started to work in the European Parliament as a parliamentary assistant for French politician Jean-Marie Le Pen.[14][15] Since this time Pierre Malinowski provided many missions abroad, notably in Russia, where he built relationships and cultural connections between Russia and France.[16] In 2015 he met President of Russia Vladimir Putin and other senior officials.[17] In the same year, Malinowski participated in the exfiltration of two French pilots in the Dominican Republic, retained in the case known as "Air Cocaine".[18][19][20] On September 2, 2015, he declared to "France 2" that he had participated in this case as "military solidarity".[21][22][23] Malinowski also was offered by the AFL organization to join the fight against the Islamic State and train the Kurdish fighters in Syria and Iraq, following the terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015.
The Foundation for the Development of Russian-French Historical Initiatives
Since 2017 he organizes many historical projects in Russia, which are based on the common history of France and Russia.[24][25][26] In October 2018, he founded the Foundation for the Development of Russian-French Historical Initiatives in Moscow and presented it to the press-secretary of Russian President, Dmitry Peskov.[13]
The Russian Expedition in France
In the years 2016 and 2017 Malinowski organised an archeological expedition to Cormicy, France.[27] During this excavation, on December 24, 2016, he found the remains of a soldier of the Russian expeditionary force of the World War I.[28] Since the end of the Great War, it was the first official case in France of founding the missing Russian soldier. During the second expedition in August 2017, Malinowski found the remains of the second Russian soldier.[28] This case was presented for Sylvain Tesson and the Russian ambassador in France, Alexander Orlov.[28]
The Normandie-Niemen Regiment Research
With a great interest in the history of the Second World War, Malinowski made a big research about The Normandie-Niemen Regiment.[29] In 2012 he met the last French pilot of this Regiment, Gaël Taburet.[30] In August 2018, after a year of research in the French and Russian archives, he found the location of the first Normandy-Niemen plane (model YAK-1).[31] The plane was found during his common work with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.[32] In the media, this case is known as a symbol of the Franco-Russian friendship against the Nazi invader.[33]
The Russian Campaign
In May 2019, the Foundation for the Development of Russian-French Historical Initiatives organized a major historical project between France and Russia.[34] An archeological expedition took place in the Smolensk region, Russia.[35] The team of researchers was led by Malinowski and made up of different specialists, as topographers, historians, French and Russian students, etc.[36][37] The main excavation took place in Valutino Gora area, where more than 12000 soldiers died.[38] As a result of the expedition was founding a lot of artefacts, as well as the remains of soldiers and horses.[37]
General Charles Etienne Gudin
In 2017, Malinowski organised an expedition for finding the body of Charles Etienne Gudin,[39] a friend of Napoleon and General of the Empire.[40][12] The remains were successfully found by his team and research was supported by the Kremlin.[41][42] The general's body was buried in the city of Smolensk, Russia.[43] In 2019 the results of the DNA analyzes confirmed, that this body belongs to General Charles Etienne Gudin.[44][45][46] This case is known as an international historical event and the body of General Gudin will be repatriated to the Les Invalides in 2021 and will be buried during an official ceremony in front of two Presedents, Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron.[47][48]
Vyazma Project
In September 2019, French and Russian teams, led by Pierre Malinowski, found 70 bodies of soldiers from Napoleon's army, killed in Vyazma during the retreat from Russia.[49]
The Crimean War
From October 1 to 20, 2020 took place the first major Franco-Russian archaeological project in Crimea and Sevastopol.[50] Despite the international situation due to covid-19, Pierre Malinowski managed to organize one of the only international cooperation projects of 2020 in Crimea.[51] For 3 weeks, the best French experts such as Michel Signoli from the CNRS worked with their Russian counterparts from the Academy of Sciences on a theme hitherto rather unknown, the Crimean War.[52] Dozens of remains of French, English and Russian soldiers were found in Sevastopol, Inkermann and Alma.[53]
In addition, Russia and the government of Sevastopol have authorized Pierre Malinowski to organize the funerals[54] of more than 150 French soldiers,[55][56][57] found in 2013 in Sevastopol during construction work and which had since remained in plastic bags waiting for France to request their funeral,[58] so that they could rest in peace.[59][60] They are now in the midst of their comrades in the Great cemetery of Sevastopol where more than 20,000 other French soldiers rest.[61]
The Winterberg Tunnel[62][63]
On May 4 and 5, 1917 in Craonne (Chemin des Dames), more than 275 young German soldiers of the R.I.R 111 from Wurtenberg disappeared in a tunnel.[64][65][66] The nearly 300-meter-long tunnel[67] [68][69]was used to supply the front line with men, arms and ammunition.[70]
The French artillery managed to destroy the two entrances and the 275 soldiers remained stranded more than 20 meters underground. Only two were saved a week later. After more than 20 years of research by his father Alain Malinowski[71] in order to locate this disappeared and legendary tunnel,[72][73][74] Pierre Malinowski, his brother and his team found the entrance on January 1, 2020 at 2 a.m. He defines this tunnel[75][76][77] as his most beautiful discovery and the “Pompeii of the great war”.
