Artist selection
On 9 January 2003, RTP announced Rita Guerra as the Portuguese entrant at the Eurovision Song Contest 2003.[1]
Canção para Eurovisão 2003
The song that Rita Guerra represented Portugal with was selected through "Canção para Eurovisão 2003", the special live show of Operação Triunfo 1. RTP opened a submission period for composers to submit their songs between 9 January 2003 and 5 February 2003.[1] Over 500 songs were received at the conclusion of the submission period, and a selection committee selected 3 songs for the competition.[2] The selected songs were announced on 18 February 2003.[3]
"Canção para Eurovisão 2003", the special live show of Operação Triunfo 1, took place at the Endemol Studios in Mem-Martins on 2 March 2003 and hosted by Catarina Furtado. During the show Rita Guerra performed all three songs, and the winning song was determined exclusively by a public telephone vote.[4][5]
