The species was first formally described by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller in 1874 in Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae, from a type specimen collected by Mary Ann[5] McHard on the Blackwood River in south-western Western Australia.[2][3] The specific epithet, skinneri, honours George Skinner, the typesetter/printer who laboured to create these volumes presented to the Victorian government.[3]
