Relative Dimensions

Relative Dimensions is an audio drama based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. This audio drama was produced by Big Finish Productions.[1]

Plot

The Doctor invites his granddaughter and recently discovered great-grandson to have Christmas dinner in the TARDIS with him and Lucie. Little does he realise that a long forgotten danger is lurking in the TARDIS and somehow it is draining all of the power.

  • The Christmas that the Doctor feels he needs to make up for occurred in Death in Blackpool.
  • The Doctor's great-grandson, Alex, was introduced in An Earthly Child. He is played by Paul McGann's son.
  • For Susan and Alex, six months have passed since An Earthly Child.
  • This is one of the few stories, in audio or television, to take place almost entirely within the TARDIS.
  • The chiropteran creatures flying around inside the TARDIS (fledershrews) were seen in the 1996 TV movie.
  • Susan obtained the fish in Quinnis, also released in December 2010 and also written by Marc Platt.
  • Lucie, Susan and Alex subsequently return in Lucie Miller.
  • This story should not be confused with the Seventh Doctor novel Relative Dementias.
  • Jamie Robertson, has composed a unique choral score which is heard throughout. It includes the song Christmas Time, performed by the Poringland Singers, written by Jamie Robertson and Ian Elliot
  • At the end of the story the Doctor breaks the fourth wall to wish listeners a happy Christmas. This is a homage to the 1965 episode The Feast of Steven, in which William Hartnell's Doctor similarly addresses the audience.

Relative Dimensions was broadcast on digital radio station BBC Radio 4 Extra on 15 Jan 2013 as a single hour-long episode.[2][3]
