Summer of 85

Summer of 85 (French: Été 85) is a 2020 French-Belgian drama film written and directed by François Ozon, partly based upon the novel Dance on My Grave by Aidan Chambers. It stars Félix Lefebvre, Benjamin Voisin, Philippine Velge, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Melvil Poupaud, and Isabelle Nanty.

Plot

While boating, Alexis's boat capsizes and almost drowns before being rescued by David, who ultimately ends up as the friend of his dreams.

Production

In June 2019, it was announced Félix Lefebvre, Benjamin Voisin and Philippine Velge had joined the cast of the film, with François Ozon directing from a screenplay he wrote.[3] Principal photography began in May 2019.[4]

Release

The film was set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2020, prior to its cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] It was released in France on 14 July 2020.[6] In September 2020, Music Box Films acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film.[7] It screened at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival on 13 September 2020.[8]

Critical reception

Summer of 85 holds a 79% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 47 reviews, with a weighted average of 6.40/10.[9] On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 69 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[10]
