It is designated as a Ramsar site,[2] a Special Protection Area,[3] a Special Area of Conservation[4] and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.[5] It is also the collective name of a group of settlements on the peninsula, which were nearly all evicted as part of the Highland Clearances.[6]
