Premise
The show is about the friendship between Riley, a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Al), the Afghan interpreter who served with his unit and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

Production
Development
On October 10, 2019, Deadline Hollywood reported that a television pilot from Chuck Lorre, David Goetsch, and Maria Ferrarihad had received a large production commitment from CBS. A multi-camera sitcom titled United States of Al, the pilot was set to be produced by Warner Bros. Television Studios and Chuck Lorre Productions, and executive produced by Lorre, Goetsch, Ferrari, Reza Aslan, Mahyad Tousi, and pilot director Mark Cendrowski.[5][6]
Casting
Two months after the announcement of the pilot, in December, Adhir Kalyan and Parker Young were cast in the roles of Awalmir and Riley, the leading characters on the show.[2][1] Dean Norris, Kelli Goss, and Elizabeth Alderfer joined soon after,[3][4] and on November 11, 2020, CBS gave the project a series order, which will premiere on April 1, 2021.[7] The following year, in January, Farrah Mackenzie was cast as a series regular in an undisclosed role.[6]
