University College at Rockland

University College at Rockland (commonly known as "URock," pronounced "you rock") is a branch of the University of Maine at Augusta. Located in Rockland, Maine, it serves over 600 students every semester and offers several dozen courses through on-site, ITV (interactive television), and online mediums. Contrary to popular belief, URock is not a community college; it is one of several regional centers owned and operated by the University of Maine at Augusta.

URock predominantly serves adults who wish to return to school to further their education.

History

The center was previously located in Thomaston, Maine.

Staff

Deborah Meehan is currently the site's director. Chip Curry, succeeding Dagmar Moravec, is serving as the center's Student Services Coordinator. URock also has three administrative assistants and maintenance personnel.

Location, physical layout, and regional influence

URock is located on the fourth floor of the Breakwater Building, located at 91 Camden Street on Route 1 in Rockland. The site is equipped with a simple laboratory, a small computer lab, several large classrooms, video conferencing and interactive television rooms, and a student lounge.

URock is one of the few institutions of higher learning in the mid-coast Maine region and is often the subject of local newspaper articles discussing the educational movements in the area.

Student activities

URock has several student organizations, including the Student Association — made up of URock student elected to leadership roles to allocate the students' activity funds — and the Rockland Honors Program, which provides participants who have displayed intellectual potential and personal commitment to academic success a chance to pursue challenging coursework and participate in various social activities.

Courses and programs

URock offers a variety of courses — both university level and remedial — including basic college mathematics, communication, English, introductory biology and anatomy and physiology, introductory computer science, art, art history, history, business, American government courses, and many others.

University College at Rockland offers several bachelor's and associate degrees in addition to various undergraduate and graduate certificates. The site's Nursing, Liberal Studies, and Computer Science programs are among its most popular.
