History
Anglo settlement in the area began around 1850, with the community being established in 1857. At this time, property was purchased and sold by Carrol Witty, William R. Nunn, and Rev. Thomas Newton McKee. Settlement began following the Civil War, with a dry goods store being the first business established in 1869. The following year, a general store was opened, with a post office following in 1871. By 1892, the population was 200, with a drug store, a general store, a cotton gin, gristmill and two general stores being in operation. A school was registered by 1900, with 114 students and three teachers being recorded. Due to the community being bypassed by the railway lines, the population decreased, with 148 people residing in the community in 1936. By 1946 only 40 people remained, which decreased to 20 by the 1960s. The population has remained at 40 since then.[2][3]
