The XI Corps of the Indian Army is based in Jalandhar and is a part of Western Command. XI Corps was raised to take command of the formations in the Punjab in 1950[1] as India reorganised its post-1947 army to meet the new threat of Pakistan.[2]

It consists of:

7th Infantry Division headquartered at Firozpur, raised in 1964.[3]
9th Infantry Division headquartered at Meerut, one brigade Meerut, one brigade Delhi, one brigade Jalandhar.
15th Infantry Division headquartered at Amritsar. Appears to include 350th Infantry Brigade.[4] The 66th Armoured Regiment fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 as the integral armoured regiment of the 15th Infantry Division.[5]
23rd Armoured Brigade
55th Mechanised Brigade (Beas)[6]

In 1984, 46th Armoured Regiment, Indian Army Armoured Corps, was based in Amritsar as part of an armoured brigade at the time of Operation Blue Star.
