1985 was the first year Sacramento State competed in the Western Football Conference. They had been a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC) from 1954 to 1984. The Hornets were led by eighth-year head coach Bob Mattos. They played home games at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. The team finished the season with a record of eight wins and three losses (8–3, 4–1 WFC). Overall, the team outscored its opponents 326–229 for the season.
