1986 Cal State Hayward Pioneers football team

The Pioneers were led by head coach Tim Tierney in his twelfth year. They played home games at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, California. The Pioneers finished the season with a record of seven wins and three losses (7–3, 3–2 NCAC). They made their way into the Top 20 three times during the season, but each time they lost their next game. The Pioneers outscored their opponents 234–187 for the 1986 season.

- California State University, East Bay was known as California State University, Hayward from 1972 to 2004.
- The official name of Cal Poly has been California Polytechnic State University since 1947. However, it is more commonly known as either Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or just Cal Poly.
- Seawolf Stadium was known as Cossacks Stadium until 2002 when the University changed the mascot from Cossacks to Seawolves.
- The official name of Chico State has been California State University, Chico since 1972. However, it is still commonly known as Chico State.
