History
The name Baringa comes from the Gubbi-Gubbi language and means summit. It is also a word in the Kabi Kabi language meaning little mountain.[1]
The locality of Baringa was excised from Bells Creek on 18 August 2017. It was created to accommodate residential population growth in the Caloundra South Priority Development Area.[1][2] The first residential land sales commenced in August 2016 with the expectation of homes being occupied from 2017. Baringa is part of a $5 billion master-planned community being developed by Stockland and is expected to accommodate 50,000 people in 30 years time.[3]
Education
A new primary (P-6) school, Baringa State School, opened in 2018 on Baringa Drive, the highest point in the residential area. The school will have an initial capacity of 470 students with a plan to accommodate 1100 students in approximately 5-8 years. The principal is Noel Baggs. The school will have an emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).[4]
Baringa State Secondary College is a (Years 7-12) state secondary school located on the corner of Griffith Place and Baringa Drive. Construction of the school commenced in March 2020 in preparation for Years 7 and 8 student enrollment and commencement from 2021. [5]
