Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007

Belarus chose Dmitry Koldun with the song "Work Your Magic", written by Karen Kavaleryan and composed by Philip Kirkorov, to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki, Finland.

Before Eurovision

Eurofest 2007

The Belarusian national final Eurofest 2007 consisted of two shows: a semi-final on 15 December 2006 and a final on 22 January 2007. Fifteen songs participated in the competition. The shows were broadcast on Channel 1 and Belarus TV.[1]

Competing entries

Artists and composers were able to submit their applications and entries to the broadcaster between 25 October 2006 and 20 November 2006.[2] At the closing of the deadline, 66 entries were received by the broadcaster. Auditions were held between 29 November and 1 December 2006 where a jury panel was tasked with selecting fifteen entries to proceed to the televised national final.[3] The selected finalists were announced on 5 December 2006.[4]

Semi-final

The televised semi-final took place on 15 December 2006 at the Republic Palace in Minsk, hosted by Denis Kurian and Olga Schlager. Public televoting first selected the song "Angel mechty" performed by Dmitry Koldun to qualify to the final. The votes of jury members made up of music professionals then selected an additional two songs to qualify to the final: "How Long" performed by Diana Gurtskaya and "S.U.P.E.R. S.T.A.R." performed by The Project.

In addition to the performances from the competitors, the show featured guest performances by 2006 Belarusian Eurovision contestant Polina Smolova and 2003 Belarusian Junior Eurovision contestant Volha Satsiuk.[1]

Final

The televised final took place on 22 January 2007 at the Sports Palace in Minsk, hosted by Denis Kurian and Olga Schlager. The votes of jury members made up of music professionals exclusively selected the song "Work Your Magic" performed by Dmitry Koldun as the winner.

In addition to the performances from the competitors, the show featured guest performances by 2005 Junior Eurovision winner Ksenia Sitnik, 2006 Belarusian Junior Eurovision contestant Andrey Kunets, 2004 Belarusian Eurovision contestants Aleksandra and Konstantin, 2005 Belarusian Eurovision contestant Angelica Agurbash, 2006 Belarusian Eurovision contestant Polina Smolova, 1991 Eurovision winner Carola, 2006 Russian Eurovision contestant Dima Bilan, 2006 Latvian Eurovision contestants Cosmos and 2002 Eurovision winner Marie N.[1]

Promotion

Prior to the contest, Dmitry departed on a promo tour across Europe performing in countries such as Spain, Ireland, Cyprus, and Macedonia.

At Eurovision

At Eurovision, Dmitry Koldun dropped his first name and performed as Koldun, which is the Russian word for "magician". As Belarus failed to qualify from the semi-final for the third time in a row, Koldun had to compete in the semi-final on 10 May. The Belarusian entry was performed fourth, following Cyrpus and preceding the Iceland. Belarus finished 4th in the semi-final, and therefore qualified for the final on 12 May, where they performed 3rd following Spain and preceding the Ireland. The entry finished in 6th place with 145 points, which is the best result for Belarus to date. With changes to the format of the competition coming into effect for 2008, Belarus would have to compete in one of two semi-finals for qualification into the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. As Belarus was not the winner of the 2007 Contest and was not a member of the Big Four, other results in the previous contest no longer pre-qualified nations to the final of the forthcoming contest.
