Cadillac Lyriq

Cadillac Lyriq is the name of an upcoming electric crossover to be produced by Cadillac,[2] a division of the automotive conglomerate General Motors (GM). It is to be the second GM electric vehicle (EV) sold in North America, after the Chevrolet Bolt. It was scheduled to be revealed in full to the public on April 2, 2020, though the unveiling was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak[3][4] to August 6, 2020.[5] This SUV is Cadillac's first fully electric vehicle. It introduces new technology, a new design style, the ability to park and unpark itself, as well as to drive on a freeway without the driver steering the wheel, a new version of GM's Super Cruise technology.[6] The vehicle will be assembled at the Spring Hill Manufacturing factory in Spring Hill, Tennessee for North America and at a new EV-only plant in Yantai, China for Asia. Spring Hill will also continue to build the Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 until Cadillac becomes an all-electric brand in the 2025 model year.

History

GM has several EV models produced on its existing BEV2 platform. At the 2019 North American International Auto Show, CEO Mary Barra revealed several details about the group's upcoming series of EVs,[7] which included a crossover from Cadillac.[8] As of March 2020, the name of this vehicle was confirmed to be Lyriq, pronounced "lyric".[9] This name follow as pattern of several prior Cadillac concept vehicles, including the Evoq, Provoq, and Celestiq, all deliberately ending in "q".[10]

The name Lyriq for Cadillac's first EV is derived from the Cadillac brand being mentioned in more music lyrics than any other brand, automotive or non-automotive.

Prior to the novel coronavirus outbreak of 2020, Cadillac had planned for a U.S.-market reveal of April 2 of that year, followed by a launch soon thereafter for the 2021 model year. Since the outbreak and subsequent launch cancellation,[11] the vehicle has been delayed but not cancelled,[12] being planned for an initial release in China followed by a U.S. release for 2022.[13][14] Chinese and Asian market production at a new plant at Shanghai GM's Yantai complex built for Ultium will start slightly before Spring Hill starts Lyriq assembly for North America.

Competition

The Lyriq will compete with other compact electric luxury crossovers like the Tesla Model Y, Audi e-tron, and the Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes-Benz EQC, BMW iX.[15]
