Ddu-Du Ddu-Du

"Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" (Korean: 뚜두뚜두, stylized in all caps) is a song recorded by South Korean girl group Blackpink, released on June 15, 2018 by YG Entertainment, as the lead single for the group's Korean debut extended play Square Up, also released simultaneously with the single.[2] It was written and produced by Teddy Park, together with 24, Bekuh Boom and R.Tee.

The single was a commercial success in South Korea, peaking atop the Gaon Digital Chart for three consecutive weeks. Its accompanying music video was released on the same day and became the most viewed online video, and second most watched music video of all time within 24 hours, at the time of its release. It has since become the first and fastest music video by a K-pop group to reach 1 billion views, and it is currently the most-viewed music video by a K-pop group on YouTube.[4]

The song featured in the fourth episode of season three of Freeform series The Bold Type.[5]

Composition

The song is described by Billboard as a "fierce hip-pop track overflowing with charisma" that "features a prominent trap beat".[2] It was written and produced by Teddy and co-produced by Bekuh Boom, 24 and R.Tee.

Music video

The music video for "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" was released on June 15 at 6PM KST via YouTube in conjunction with the single's release.[6] It became the most viewed online video in the first 24 hours by a Korean act, and the second most watched music video of all time with more than 36.2 million views within 24 hours after release, surpassing Psy's "Gentleman" and second only to Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do".[7] The music video hit 100 million views in just 10 days, making “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” the only music video by an all-female group to achieve the feat in such short amount of time.[8] In November 2018, five months after release, it became the fastest music video by a K-pop group to reach 500 million views and the fifth most viewed K-pop video of all time at the time.Rolling Stone named it the eighth best music video of 2018, describing it as "a feat of bonkers, maximalist creativity that includes the best use of a tank in a music video since Master P’s 'Make 'Em Say Uhh!.'"[9]

On January 13, 2019, the music video became the fastest by a K-pop group to reach 600 million views,[10] and the second to achieve that milestone. It became the most-viewed music video by a K-pop group on YouTube on January 21, with 620.9 million views; the video averaged 2.5 million views per day since its release, with 1.95 million daily views in January 2019.[11] On March 9, 2019, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" became the first K-pop group music video to reach 700 million views on YouTube. It crossed 800 million views just over two months later, on May 12, 2019, another first for any K-pop group. On November 11, 2019 at 6:50PM KST, the music video surpassed 1 billion views; Blackpink is the first K-pop group, second girl group, and fourth music group overall to accomplish this.[12][13] As of January 8, 2021 the music video has over 1.45 billion views.[14][15]

A dance practice video for the song was released on June 18.[16]

Commercial performance

In South Korea, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" initially debuted at no. three on the Gaon Digital Chart for the tracking week ending June 16. The following week it topped the chart, achieving the highest weekly Gaon Digital Index. Additionally, it topped the component download and streaming chart.[17] It topped the Digital chart for three weeks and spent 50 weeks in the top 100.[18] It was certified platinum twice by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA), for 100 million streams on November 8, 2018, and 2.5 million digital copies on April 11, 2019.[19][20]

"Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" debuted at no. 55 on the US Billboard Hot 100 dated June 30, 2018. This promted the highest charting song for a Korean girlgroup on the chart; record previously held by Wonder Girls' "Nobody" in 2009. In its opening week, the song accumulated 12,4 million streams and sold more than 7,000 digital copies.[21] According to Nielsen, the song received 113 million on-demand streams in 2018.[22] On August 23, 2019, the song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for track equivalent sales of 500,000 units, thus becoming the first Korean girlgroup and only third Korean artist after Psy and BTS to receive one.[23] In Canada, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" debuted at no. 22 on the Canadian Hot 100 and stayed in the chart for ten weeks.[24] In Europe, the song reached the charts in Scotland (#32)[25] and the UK (#78).[26]

Promotion

Blackpink promoted the song on several music programs in South Korea including Show! Music Core and Inkigayo.[27][28]

On February 12, 2019, Blackpink made their American television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert performing the song on the 55th anniversary of The Beatles' American television debut in the same theater.

Japanese version

On August 17, it was announced that the Japanese version would be released as a physical single on August 22. It included all the songs from their debut EP Square Up plus the Japanese version of the song. It was released in three versions: CD+DVD, CD, and CD for each member.[29]

The single debuted at number 6 on the Oricon Daily Singles Chart and peaked at number 2 in its sixth day with 3,725 copies sold.[30][31] The single debuted at number 7 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart with 24,385 copies sold.[32]

The song placed at number 57 at Billboard Japan Hot 100 Year End chart, placing 46 in Top Streaming Songs.[33][34]
