Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004

Denmark selected their entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 in Istanbul, Turkey through the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2004. The winner was Thomas Thordarsson with the song "Sig Det' Løgn", which was translated into and sung in English as "Shame on You".

Before Eurovision

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2004

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2004 was the 34th edition of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, the music competition that selects Denmark's entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. The event was held on 7 February 2004 at the Atletion Arena in Aarhus, hosted by Natasja Crone and Peter Mygind.

Format

Ten songs competed in one show where the winner was determined over two rounds of voting. In the first round, the top five songs based on the results of a public vote qualified to the second round. In the second round, the winner was determined by regional televoting. The results of the public vote were revealed by Denmark's four regions, with the voting figures of each region, along with the SMS figures being converted to points. Viewers were able to vote via telephone or SMS.

Competing entries

DR opened a submission period for artists and composers to submit their entries. The broadcaster received 315 entries during the submission period. A selection committee selected ten songs from the entries submitted to the broadcaster. The competing artists and songs were officially presented on 8 January 2004.[1]

Final

The final took place on 7 February 2004. In the first round of voting the top five advanced to the second round based on the results of a public vote: "Solens sang" performed by Neighbours, "Mest når det er regn" performed by Petsi Tvørfoss, "Prinsesse" performed by Zididada, "Hvor end du går hen" performed by Ditlev Ulriksen and "Sig det' løgn" performed by Tomas Thordarson. In the second round, the winner, "Sig det' løgn" performed by Tomas Thordarson, was selected by regional televoting and SMS voting.[2][3]

At Eurovision

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, a semi-final round was introduced in order to accommodate the influx of nations that wanted to compete in the contest. Due to missing the 2003 contest, Denmark had to compete in the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2004. Thordarsson sang in the 19th position, following Croatia and preceding Serbia and Montenegro. At the close of the voting, the song had received 56 points, placing 13th in a field of 22. Denmark did not qualify to the final. Therefore, Denmark had to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2005.
