Dur al-Manthur
Al-Durr Al-Manthur Fi Tafsir Bil-Ma'thur (Arabic: الدر المنثور في التفسير بالماثور, lit. 'The Scattered Pearls: Intertextual Exegesis') is a Sunni tafsir (exegesis or commentary of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam) recognized as authoritative, written by the prominent Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH (1505 AD),[1] who also co-wrote the Tafsir al-Jalalayn. The exegesis explains each passage of the Qur'an by the reports and narrations from the Islamic prophet Muhammad, his Companions and the immediate generations following the Companions. Suyuti compiled all the reports and narrations that he could gather for each particular passage - even contradictory reports, as can be seen in the narrations gathered explaining verse 33:33:
Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn 'Asakir have related from 'Ikrimah, May Allah be pleased with him, from Ibn 'Abbas, May Allah be pleased with him and his father, that he said on the Qur'anic verse [Surely, Allah desires only to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Household]: It was revealed about the wives of the Prophet - peace be upon him - specifically.
And Ibn Sa'd related from 'Urwah - May Allah be pleased with him - that he said: [Surely, Allah desires only to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Household], meaning the wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
And Ibn Mardawaih related from Um Salamah, Mother of the Believers, that she said:
This verse has been revealed in my house: [Surely, Allah desires only to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to Purify you completely], and in the house were seven people: Gabriel, Mikail, Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Hussein, while I was at the door of the house, so I said: O Messenger of Allah, allow me to ask who the People of the Household are? He said: You are going to be fine, since you are among the wives of the Prophet.
And Ibn Jarir as well as Ibn Abi Hatim and al-Tabarani narrated from Abi Sa'id al-Khudri, that he said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: This verse has been revealed upon five persons: Myself, 'Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Hussein: [Surely, Allah desires only to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to Purify you completely]
